I am wondering how many retinal cells do mouse have? Are there any studies to investigate the cell number dynamics at different age? And is there any difference of retinal cell numbers between the different strains? Many thanks.

Indeed, the retina of a mouse belonging to the C57Bl6 strain, has an order of magnitude of about 5 million rods and 150,000 cones. Rod bipolar cells are around 200,000 and cone bipolar cells are 400,000. Amacrines are in a close to 1:1 ratio with bipolar cells and ganglion cells are "only" 50,000. SO, all together, there are around 6.5 million cells (a bit less) in a mouse retina. I rounded up the numbers to make then easier to rememebr! Fo accurate variations in ganglion cell numbers across mouse strains, check the work of Williams, while bipolar and amacrine variations have been studied by Ben Reese group.
