These are average numbers but can vary considerable depending on engine displacement and idle speed. Adding loads like AC can increase it substantially.
This value varies even for the same motor/vehicle - eg. depending on current engine and environmental conditions. My car (1.9 l 4-cyl Diesel) consumes 0.6 .. 0.8 l/h while idling.
My experience with a 4 cylinder, 1.5 Liter, Gasoline engine has been that, after cold start the consumtption is around 1.2 L/Hr. Once the engine is warmed up, it went to a level of 0.5 L/Hr max.
It actually, depends on engine fuelling requirements, and hence the calibrations. can even vary for same engine under different operating conditions -
1. Engine Temperature,
2. Electrical Load - If alternator is demanding more torque, the idle RPM will be slightly increased and hence higher FC.
3. Accessory Operation - typically high consumption loads like AC, Headlamps, etc trigger an increased idle rpm. Electric Power Steering can also influence.
