When does the number of publications go beyond the limits of decency? And do such limits exist? Do productive researchers achieve recognition, or vice versa?
It will depend upon the quality of the journal one is publishing, and also the other academic load that the academic has. Then, we also do other academic activities. But despite this, I feel an academic should ideally publish about 2-3 papers in one year, with or without co-authors, in good quality journals. In case, there are many co-authors, the number may increase. It should be considered as decent.

based on the quality of article I think we can write only 2 article per year. It is also based on which journal( review processing ) we are proceeding for..
Author’s Productivity Pattern in Accordance with Lotka’s Law
By applying Lokta’s law , a bibliometric balance in a journal that ― the number (of authors) making n contribution is about 1 / n c of those making one contribution, where c nearly always equals two (c ≈ 2) ; and the proportion of all contributors, that makes a single contribution per cent.
The number of articles published in any field, depends on the researchers ability to productively create articles for publication
SANNI, SHAMSUDEEN ADEMOLA, (2011) PUBLICATION PRODUCTIVITY AND CITATION ANALYSIS OF THE MEDICAL JOURNAL OF MALAYSIA: 2004 to 2008
It depends upon your workload, if you are specific for research and you are supervising students for their Theses, dissertations and independent studies and projects then there must be more chances to publish your more articles. But again it depends upon the quality of research work and the reputation of the research Journal in which your research articles are being published. If you are talking about the ISI Web of Science Journals then of course there will be not be more than 6 articles in a year time period, because it requires more concentration and time to complete a quality paper for these sort of reputed Journals. But in a parallel, you and your students are doing research and getting publish in different Journals then the numbers can be increased.
I think that we have to distinguish between writing an article alone and by participating in a joint work. The latter is popular, but there are some jokes about the reasons why many co-authors are included, so let's forget that option.
A second classification is this: Theoretical vs Experimental work. Many Doctors of Medicine publish a lot because they have the ability to treat every simple disease as a potential research work. So, again let's omit them.
Finally, if you work alone and have the 'right mood', then you can create many articles in one year. The problem is if they will be accepted for publishing, provided that: 1)you are a newbie 2)you don't have a support from a 'heavy name'.
Depends on the quality of the paper, quality of the journal, number of contributing co-authors, and whether publication is in Open Access journals, which requires funding to pay for APCs.
