During last 5-6 decades we have generated enough data from traditional experiments on nutrient management with graded levels of fertilizers in almost all systems and situations. Research on permutations & combination of chemical fertilizer is still going on. Is there any need to continue the same for some more decades? OR agronomists should focus more on: (1) nutrient management on the basis of soil fertility status and crop's removal, (2) STCR, (3) SSNM, (4) nano fertilizer, (5) soil fertility analysis by hyperspectral imagery & nutrient management. Certainly for developing & tropical countries INM should be considered to supply nutrients, not to rely only on chemicals, targeting production sustainability.
Sir, I have gone through your question and you have critically analysed the research trends whatever going on specific to Indian scenario and more specifically in SAUs. Sir, I strongly agree with your recommendation to go for STCR or hyperspectral imaging to apply precise fertilization or agro-inputs and we can go for INM and SSNM approaches. But the thing is most of the research we are doing are based on assumptions and we generally assume that our research material is homogeneous which is not true. And sir my another point in favor of graded level of fertilizer experiment is, the soil and even the agricultural system is so dynamic that whenever we start an experiment it will definitely give us some different outcomes even if we are applying same grades of fertilizers year after year and it will give different result in different places. So, we should 1st build up a complete set of fertility map of the whole country and it should be updated regularly in a year or two and also we have to have a complete review on area specific physical and economic optimum fertilizer RDF of each crop, then only we can stop repeating these conventional fertility research.

I consider that nutrient management on the basis of soil fertility status is the most important focus, but it depends of especific geographic characteristics. Our experience is with esterile substrates for studyng fertilization, but now we are analyzing genetic changing effects through the fenotiped. While in cultivars experiments it is necesary to obtain the most quantity of measurements, in laboratory is fundamental to guarrantie the variables control. On the other hand, in our country, the practical aplication of fertilzer includes a previuos soil study.
