I'm looking for innovative processes to recover excavated plastic from landfill mining... I want to avoid incineration because right now the waste-to-energy plant is already working full capacity.
Several tests have been executed with mining landfill sites and mechanically recover the metals and plastics. Thomas Pretz has published on this topic.
Options are shrinked when you eliminate incineration from the process. But still sorting the plastic according to use and it may be heated to reshape it for using for further applications.
Most of the residual solid waste comes from the MBT (mechanical biological plant) process. this residual waste contains a very small size of plastics and its separation is not economically viable. In the present time, incineration plants more efficient to extract most of the energy from landfill waste.
Adopting any waste to energy or waste to resource technology will depend upon the quality of this waste feed. This feed varies with region and season so the selection of any technology like pyrolysis, gasification, heat treatment, biological degradation, or blending this waste with other material is feed quality dependent and is very critical.
