In mitosis and meiosis there is a structure called the mitotic spindle in mitosis and the meiotic spindle in meiosis. This structure is proteins called microtubules and their function is to move chromosomes to opposite poles of the cell during anaphase. For this, such microtubules or meiotic spindle must join each of the homologous chromosomes in meiosis. If this does not occur, the meiotic spindle will not be able to move the chromosomes towards the poles of the cells and then when cytokinesis is performed, the cell will divide into two daughter cells and since the chromosomes did not separate, a cell will remain with an extra chromosome.
