Different countries have different clinical trials registry system to register the trail studies. Many published studies are registered while many are not. What are the advantages and disadvantages of registering the clinical trials?
International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) exists in World Health Organization! The Universal Trial Number (UTN) is described on the second link, and it is very important in control process.
Good question. In my opinion, it is quite important to set up and maintain clinical trials registry system. It would support to do trend analysis and make necessary remedial arrangements.
The very objective behind this initiative (ClinicalTrial registry) is publication of the study protocol and study results, to bring transperency within and beyond research community. The authorities handling these registry systems have stringent QA/QC process before your study details appears to public on the respective websites. This increases the credibility of your study(ies). Also, this is the best medium for potential volunteers to know about the ongoing studies and they may contact, if interested in participating. Researchers interested in knowing about the ongoing studies also get updates.
Last but not the least, most of the Journals do not accept your study results for publication, if it is not registered or you fail to provide registry number.
The studies which are published but you find them not registered might have initiated or completed before 2005 when ClinicalTrialregistry was not made mandatory. (Or some Journals are not bothered still to accept the studies which are not registered)
I do not find any disadvantage of registering the clinical trials on the websites recommended for respective regulatory area.
The purpose of a clinical trial registry is to increase transparency and access to clinical trials, made available to the public. It is important to have a trial registered when dealing with therapy interventions, pharmacological interventions etc.
This following link from wiki give the necessary details...
There is no doubt that it is very important to register before you start a clinical trial. Potential patients have possibility to get benifits from this trial and the clinical trial itself also has possibility to be ammended.

More importantly is the transparency. If you post your project then people can have some input to help perfecting the proposal. Also, you have a better chance to publish in a high impact factor journal.
The concept of registration of clinical trials is based on many dimensions. The first is basically of ethical importance. The right an dignity of the participants must be protected. People must not be used as experiemntal animals.
Secondly, the issue of adverse reaction to clinical trials is of great importance. Registration of clinical trials will make it easy to monitor adverse reaction of participants to a trial. This can be classified as Mild, Moderate and Severe Adverse Effects.
The third reason is for accountability and tranparency. People must be accountable and responsible for everything they do or set out to do. There must be absolute transparency.
The fourth reason i patency. Researchers must place patency on their intellectual assets.
The fifth reason is for desemination of information. We must be able to attribute what to who.
