Often, cortisol levels in fish are measured immunologically using antibodies with high (or non-defined) cross-reactivity with corticosterone. A few references (and I'm looking for more) indicate that fish may have relatively high corticosterone levels (higher than cortisol), making these "cortisol" assays and reported results of limited value.
I'm happy to learn more about cortisol/corticosterone levels and functional relationships in various fish species.
Dear Raúl. Thanks for the response and a reference to the excellent paper by Tort. However, my question was not on cortisol or it's role, but on corticosterone. One of the papers that have caught my attention is that by Nematollahi et al 2011 showing carp that have corticosterone levels which are 20 times higher than the cortisol levels. Although these fish have a syndrome which may explain this, I'm still curious to learn more about corticosterone in other fish species and corticosterone changes in response to stress.
