Knowledge is both a pleasure to give and to receive. Its is rare human who does not accept mental horizon-widening knowledge with grace.
How has artificial knowledge (AI) impacted this otherwise flow of expertise from the higher to the lower portal? Has the difference been the portals been diminished or erased in day-to-day medical care of millions of patients as well as in learning of millions of junior doctors worldwide?
If so, is such erasure beneficial to the learners? Should AI in the form of PDAs be banned on medical rounds with senior staff?
Is AI detrimental for learners? Does AI give a false sense of knowing?
Is AI the same as real life intelligence?
Does the glee of blurting Google snippets on rounds enhance the "I know" syndrome?
I think the influence of search engines so far was predominantly on patients rather than on medical rounds. I have repeatedly seen worried patients in the emergency department after they had previously entered symptoms into search engines. They suspected to have an awful disease (although luckily, they were in fact not severely ill).
Rainer: Whether we or the patient access AI for information on diseases, the fact remains that, at least in Medicine, the untrammelled Internet is the Wild West of the 20th and 21st Century, and, probably for several millennia if not perpetuity. AI on diseases never passes vetting by the reviewer-Editorial combine, and, has no scientific standing or legal sanctioning. In a case of impugned therapeutic misadventure, AI cannot be quoted as concrete evidence in defence of the doctor in the dock.
Emergency Departments do not run on AI. In our Hospitals, we strongly discourage use of AI for triage of patients. If the ER doctor also resorts to AI, footfall will fall precipitously. Yes, patients are anxious, but they are not STUPID. Patients easily see the composure and depth of their doctor or the lack of it.
AI is good for social networking and dating, which also not frequently result in horrific social consequences such as date rape, stalking, and flashing...
AI is a boon for drug peddlers and terrorists and so on...
