Everybody has a role to play in contributing to mitigate climate change or global warming. Obviously that include Project Managers in their ways of managing their projects.
- Have you consider to reuse the project materials from past projects?
- Are there ways to minimize energy usage for your projects?
- Is the project producing biodegradable products?
- Is the project causing pollution to the environment and how to migitate it?
- Is the project contributing more carbon to the environment?
The easiest thing for most of the project managers to do is reconsider whether is it necessary to print out the thick project reports which most people just stack them aside. ;)
Every project that delivered on time, within budget, according to scope and of high quality is a greener project. It causes more environment damage to fix a failed project with more resources and materials.

I agree with you on the correlation between project management and climate change. Project managers should consider greener ways of managing their projects. The thing is, when it comes to environmentaly friendly project materials, people tend to use extra consideration as these materials generally cost more. Perhaps the first steps to take in moving towards greener project management is to educate project owners on the climatic impact their projects may have, and the long-term benefit of using greener project materials.
We need to change the mindset of project managers and business about green project. Here are some suggested ways of promoting green project:
- Green project helps to save money for business in long term and not incurring more costs
- Green project drives more initiatives, new businesses and opportunities
- Green project build track records and reputation
- Green project enhances business sustainability
- Green project enhances market share
- Green project enhances social responsibilities
The best way is to gather some successful green projects as the case studies and promote to wider audiences.
However, lack of assessment and measurement of how green a project is could be a major challenge.
Lastly, start green project at every small steps. eg. print project document using recycle papers
Printing project documents is a big issue where I live; the administrative system makes it imperative for consultants to hand over up to ten copies of those very, very thick project reports. Therefore, if we're going towards a paperless reporting system, or at least trying to use recycled paper, then it would mean changing the whole administrative system, nation-wide. Here lies the real problem...even if we decide to go green, but the system, and the work environment around us does nothing to support this kind of attitude, then our attempts may be absolutely meaningless.
