Is it possible to identify live cells with SYTO13 alone? Or does only staining in combination with Ethidium Bromide allow differentiation between live and dead cells? I am using a microscope that does not have a RFP filter cube to visualize Ethidium Bromide, but it does have a CY5, CY7, and DAPI filter cubes (in addition to GFP).

Is there another "dead stain" similar to Ethidium Bromide that fluoresces in the far red spectra? Or perhaps in DAPI wavelengths?Trypan blue fluoresces red but also quenches green fluorescence, and Hoechst or DAPI fluoresce in blue but stain all cells alive or dead. Are there any other options? Thanks.
