I've come across a couple of papers now saying that high levels of vimentin increase the invasiveness of a cancer, I was wondering if anyone knew why?
The appearance of vimentin in "epithelial" cancer cells is one of the numerous signatures linked to the epithelial-to-mesenshymal transition (EMT).

I do not agree more. Vimentin as well as fibronetin and N-cadherin become to be predominantly expressed after epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In contrast, tumor cells undergoing EMT does no longer express E-cadherin and ZO-1. It is widely accepted that EMT alters the phenotype of tumor cells; to increase the number of cancer stem cells, to increase the invasive phenotype with up-regulation of MMP.
