How does the surface roughness of a material affect its friction coefficient?

I am currently studying the friction behavior of materials, and I am curious about how surface roughness affects the friction coefficient. Does increasing the surface roughness of a material result in a higher or lower friction coefficient? Are there any specific surface roughness values that are optimal for reducing friction? I would greatly appreciate any insights or references on this topic. Thank you in advance!

The rougher the surface the greater the friction. That is why they highly

polish steel runners for the Olympic luge sled blades or ball bearings and raceways.
