A 2D sand soil was modeled by Opensees software. The PSA values of soil surface have been recorded in two different conditions (with and without surcharge mass). What is the relationship between obtained PSAs out of 2 conditions?
When you have a surcharge, mean stress will be changed, which can lead to change in shear strength (in case of pressure dependent material), that can make your selected location stiff in comparison to no surcharge location, you can plot amplification in both cases and also can compare strain profiles.
In soil dynamics it is well known that all the kinematic (accn, vel, displ) parameters depend on the velocity of shear waves namely Vs =sqrt(G/ρ ). In the presence of surcharge the stresses acting on the soil will increase. This will be accompanied by reduction in G and increase in ρ. Therefore Vs will reduce. It is your job to find out how G and ρ vary with the stress in order to estimate the new value of Vs. The variation of the peak spectral acceleration can then be related to the values of Vs.
