In general i.e. ragardless of scale considered I share the view of D.Raabe: the localization becomes inevitable as far as hardening by a previous deformation mode no longer a) provides geometrical stability of deformation or/and b) keeps tolerable (fracture-free) stress level. However, the famous instability criterion by Considera dS/de< = S is hardly applicable to a MICROSCOPIC scale, and some its appropriate alternative should be considered. I think the most natural criterion of the kind is ability of virtual localized mode (micro- or mesobands) to penetrate microstructural BARRIERS made by the predeformation or other previous treatment. This is clearly illustrated by the case of CHANGING THE STRAIN-PATH or deformation of heavily IRRADIATED metals with a highest density of point-like defects. /// In both cases the localization makes easy trajectories for shearing as people, one by one, gradually improve the same path in deep snow.
