In most (many?) articles dedicated to validate surface soil moisture products from ASCAT, SMOS or SMAP, authors compares SM estimates against in-situ measurement on fixed depth (for example 5 cm). Obviously, they have in-situ measurements at different depths, but since satellites describe only surface SM, they rather (?) do not use them nor calculate average.

Correct me if I am wrong, but satellites, describes average soil moisture content in soil moisture layer from 0 cm to X cm, where X depends on used instrument.

So, let me ask:

  • if there are any articles, which compares surface soil moisture measured in-situ at different depths - for example (weighted?) average for 2 cm, 3 cm and 5 cm?
  • if there are any articles which describes changes in first few centimeters of soil/describe surface soil moisture profile (depending on soil type?)
