According to http://sac.csic.es/spei/home.html

to calculate SPEI we use precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (PET):

"the difference between the precipitation (P) and PET for the month i is calculated:

D_{i} = P_{i} - PET_{i}

which provides a simple measure of the water surplus or deficit for the analyzed month.

The calculated Di values are aggregated at different time scales"

and after this aggregation for N number of months and additional computations, SPEI for N months is calculated.

My questions are:

  • Since D is aggregated to calculate different SPEI products, I do not understand why SPEI products store information for each month. For example consider 3-month SPEI. If I have value for day X, I would expect that next value will be for day X + 3 months. What are the values in SPEI? Are they a moving average values?
  • What is the proper way of comparing SPEI for N months against different drought indexes? Should I compute an average value for N months for index which I am comparing against?
