It may hard to distinghish because changes in "distribution of biological diversity" and environmental factors are often co-varied with geographic distance. Some studies used spatial eigenfunction analyses to decompose this scale-dependent spatial structure. Maybe you can refer to Leandro et al 2012 "Assessing spatial and environmental drivers of phylogenetic structure in Brazilian Araucaria forests".
