The thermal band of the Landsat TM has shown to be significant in contributing to the separability of soil categories through its ability to characterize the clay, organic matter, and iron-oxide content of the soil. Can anyone help me with deriving soil parameters such as moisture content, clay content or any other such parameters from Landsat or other satellite images in ArcGIS. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. Actually I am doing a project on Soil Mapping and was interested in deriving soil parameters directly from Satellite Images using GIS software. Of all the information I have collected so far methodologies are not very clear, so I wanted a lead or a literature that can be of help.

Response of James and link of paper given by him exactly provide a sound methodological basis that can be used for your purpose as hydrological soils are determined on the basis of proportion clay, silt and sand particles. Otherwise at ResearchGate publications find out papers on remote sensing of clay or using some other appropriate keywords, you can certainly download important methodological papers of your interest.

I think ArcGIS is not the best software for performing such kind of task. You need something more specific like ENVI, Erdas or other image processing software. ArcGis has the image processing extension but I am not so confident in that kind of add-ons

We are using Erdas Imagine as well but we have just started using it. Could you please be a little more specific regarding the use of Erdas for mapping soil properties using Landsat images.

I think ArcGis is not the best classifier too. Try Erdas or Envi. There are free sotwares like Spring (http://www.dpi.inpe.br/spring/) and gvSIG (http://www.gvsig.org/web/projects/gvsig-desktop/official/gvsig-1.10/descargas). Have a good job.
