Chest radiographs (including both digital and conventional) have a low sensitivity and specificity for detection of pulmonary nodules. Dual energy subtraction radiography has been shown to increase the sensitivity and specificity for detection of pulmonary nodules. How does DT tomosynthesis perform in this context?
Vikgren et al. (Radiology, 2008) showed an increased sensitivity for detecting lung nodules with tomosynthesis compared to CXR, in particular for nodules smaller than ~10mm. Terzi et al. (J. Thorac. Onc. 2013) even showed a comparable detection rate for non-calcified lung nodules than CT in an observational study.
