Science is evolving now at incredible speed making the sphere of human knowledge bigger and bigger every single year. As a result, at some point children will need to learn much more than we learn now. At the same time, human ability to learn does not seem to be unlimited. How do you see the future educational system, say, in 50 years? 100 years? Do we need to think about it already now?

It may be as follows, I am afraid:
1. Obligatory, computer-aided, individually shaped education for children with cyclic exams and head-hunters for industry, science, and government - see "Ender's game".
2. Online courses cycles instead of contemporary academic degrees (BSc, MSc, PhD).
3. Supplemental online education for adults (e.g. for change of post/job purposes).
Education should be as flexible as possible. There will be few professions for human (very simple: not automated due to low cost, and very complex or creative, not automated due to computational complexity) since a lot of tasks will be fulfilled by automata.

May be to others i am not very optimistic in this regard but what i feel is that Quality of Education will suffer in future. There would be quantity but quality will be compromised. More fields of education would be there but the system of education would be less productive as compared to the past.
Good question, Pavel! A movement away from the sage on the stage to the guide by the side. But the central issue remains: What are our options? Teaching or research institutions?

I like your points! I am sure that we will definitely have huge contributions from #2 and #3 because essentially we already use them, but in sort of embryonal form - there are many ways to increase the effectiveness of existing online education.
The idea you mentioned in #1 is very intriguing. It was also shown quickly in "Man of Steel" movie where each individual citizen of Krypton was born for a specific purpose. This type of ideas will require serious changes in our way of living. :)

I agree with you in the sense that we have to pay attention to potential drawbacks of new educational system. The issue of quantity against quality is not new, and I am glad that it pops up here in a little bit different context.
It would be more experimental rather than theoretical and more technological. I doubt if there will be any grounded institution, everything might be virtual.
Dear Marwan, indeed what are the options?! Personally, I think teaching will remain, but its form will change for sure! Research institutions will also survive, I hope, but the intensity of the preparation of junior researchers should increase...

Thank you very much for sharing you observations! It seems like people have already started to think about this issue, and I am very glad to hear that. It is really nice that computers and technologies are used in a constructive way rather than just for gaming applications. However, my main concern is about the amount of information children will need to learn in the future in order to be successful at least in academic environment. What do we have now? Elementary school, middle school, high school, undergrad, Master's Programm, PhD - and a person goes to the academia, for example. And after all this training, this person is more or less good expert in comparatively narrow area of science. How is it going to change in the future? Is this area going to be even narrower comparing to the whole knowledge sphere?

As far as I know from my GF (she is geneticist), CLONES will be helpless as infants when it comes to experience or knowledge! :) But it is a nice idea for a new sci-fi movie, ha? :)
By the time education will be more techo-dependent, but the role of teacher will be more crucial. The future teacher will have to be kind of mental trainer who will have to train students with the inflow of the information in their brain, and keep themselves physically and mentally strong enough to be a productive 'world citizen'.
The teaching approach will be more individual specific. Academia will have to solve rather complicated questions.
The future of education is on-line and flexible learning with less on-campus teaching. More specialised global teaching (lecturers) across several institutions, less individual lecturers at institutions, less buildings and lecture rooms, more field work and practical experience and more focus on-campus research.
Teachers will have to be more flexible and open minded t cope with ever changing world of education.
@Nelson touch very sensitive matter when he told about small business in educational area. It is obvious that finance resourses have infrastructural meaning for the future education stucture.
Tools of education will change but schooling will remain as it is but will take shorter time. Students can go to the work force in less years than now. Higher education will change and will tend to be self-education

But Pavel, I am not so sure all the great improvements as discussed above by Samuel et al., are going to happen. Because school science, just an example, didn't seem to change much at all, over the past 20 or 30 years. While educators like us want the progress, what and who are holding us back?

For example, what we see now - as science is developed by researchers, new more advanced courses are offered in universities and new books are released each year. Blended and E-learning evolve as well.

What is holding us back? Well, that a very profound question... Lack of money maybe? As far as I see there are more money started to go towards EDUCATION RESEARCH in STEM here in the United States! I think that IT technologies could be very helpful for teaching and student's evaluation.May be a global scheme could be implemented under an international organization control, students will be lucky with the ability offered to them to choose the program and the educators at local and worldwide levels. Teachers will be more involved into a quality competition scheme. Young researchers are being to be involved in research scholarships earlier and degrees will be adjusted on programs vs.vocations. However student skills evaluation will be a key question from what student has really in his/her brain and what student takes from internet, ie the ability from students to be innovative and creative
Countries and people who gained the edge will be exposed to learning environments that are more private and more machine-dependent. Courses will become customized, soft and flexible, and disposable. The teacher divide, student divide, institution divide, and education divide will be more distinct and gloomy.
I think that virtual reality in education will not play an excessive role. Live communication between students is a significant part of the education at whole.

Education has to dramatically change in the near future from the current mode to a more learner-centric and qualitative type. The quantitative era is nearing its end now, with nothing more to achieve and attain. The qualitative appreciation of facts is much more important than the quantitative. This is what the geniuses do. And mankind has to evolve from blind dependence on mathematical tools of understanding to the enlightened vision of the wholeness of nature.
Compartmentalization of knowledge at higher levels is a ludicrous thing, which is sure to go in near future.
The experts knowing more and more about less and less are a sheer burden and it is a caricature of the goals of education to produce such experts in large numbers.
Values are lacking in all fields of human endeavor today including education. The values are to be brought back and they have to be there from beginning to the end.
Corruption of character at the teen-ages through lack of discrimination between "what is really good" and "what is merely pleasant " has to be arrested in all countries that want a stronger future generation.

In my opinion education will be look like udaity.com. I think it is the future of higher education. It's the beginning of higher education for everybody.

Education in future will be a big consumer industry. The way education is being treated as a commodity - the futuristic education is bound to take a leap. We shall be again going back to the era where education is "self acquired" rather than sold in the big shopping malls they call "Universities". Despite the "branded education" making all the big forays, the "real education" will never die and will have a lasting future.
