sorry but i don't know what you mean by 'genuine' universities. I agree with the author of the article that academia is changing in response to the internet. I don't know if it is for the better or worse. One thing is clear, that in this modern age, universities are big business. In my daily life here in London I see many ads for universities touting for students, in the underground and on buses. Thirty years ago or m ore, the attitudes were different. Universities were to provide a public service to educate the intellectual elite in society. They did not advertise their credentials. Instead there were academic reputations, so that students tried to get into the top status universities. This is still true, but there are many more universities now, all vying for funds. This means devising popular courses that appeal to those who are not necessarily the intellectual elite any more but they will bring in money. Teaching methods are changing accordingly. I cannot predict future trends, but change is happening rapidly. Universities are becoming organisations for those with the money for courses, and for those who are not necessarily particularly clever.
