I think L1R is the extension for Hyperion HDF files. Therefore, the easiest way is using "hdftool" to see if Matlab can recognize the file or not (just type "hdftool" in Matlab command window and hit ENTER). If Matlab can recognize it, then you can use "hdfinfo and hdfread" commands...
