Perhaps one of the recent additions in open/Lap colonic surgery is ICG test to check the vascularity of the edges of the colonic resection and also anastamosis.I found it to be useful as the ICG lights up in the above areas making us confident of the vascularity which we usually assess by looking at the colour without compromising the Laparoscopic view.It takes hardly few minutes extra to test.Your experience and openion are valuable.
Fluorescence angiogrpahy with ICG, is a very promising modality and several (non-RCT) studies indicates lower leakage rates in colorectal resection, when compared to conventional perfusion assessment.
However, when using ICG as a visual assessment of perfusion observer bias is of concern. Very few studies have used a quantitative approach in order to estimate cut off values for good or poor perfusion.
