interest is the best, in my opion. take every product as an example. there is an existed process for the product.  waste residue will be generated. you can give your solution to  avoid the waste reside or inspires your students to think about the solution to avoid the waste reside. and another way, maybe, highlight the theroy with some products and by-product. I hope, it will help you and your student.

You can include Green Chemistry and Green Engineering into chemical engineering undergraduate curriculum the topics such as Principles of Green Chemistry, Green & Ecofriendly methods of production of Chemicals  such as Microwave, Ultra sonication, use of ionic liquids, Solvent free reactions, Reaction in  water, use of Green catalysts like zeolite, Biotechnological methods use of enzymes in catalysis, Use of Microbes & pheromones in Agriculture.

I believe that within the required courses should integrate green chemical processes that may or are being studied using these processes.

Isolated disciplines aims to specialize, but over the course subjects have to update the modern outlook and trends of green chemistry.

The disciplines that have practical classes must incorporate at least 25% of classes in contents of the Green Chemistry because it is a market trend worldwide demand for these processes. Use of waste and effluents, biorefinery concepts, sustainability processes, energetic use of waste and recycle energy, use of biopolymers and biofuels; are the most interesting, well, that's my opinion.

Introducing green chemistry/engineering concepts in the courses of a chemical engineering degree makes for a very good differentiator of the program. My recommendation would be to also add a few courses related to earth and environmental sciences, to give context to the need for green chemistry/engineering and to expose students to fundamentals that are not part of core chemical engineering.

It does not have to be so complicated. Green chemistry and green engineering is basically just smarter processes with less problematic chemicals and therefore simple comparrisons of old and new processes for making the same product. Real green chemistry and engineering leads to substantial savings in energy and money and reduced waste and is something the successfull industry has been working on way before the green chemistry boom.

Compare different types of process equipment for the same purpose and show how these have changed through time. Compare different routes for producing chemicals and show which process that have gone extinct due to cost and the one gone extinct is almost always the least environmentally friendly.

Chemical recovery in pulp and paper mills is one example of green chemistry and engineering where small changes in chemicals and small reconstruction of process equipment saved substantial amount of chemicals, energy and money.

In courses regarding materials chemistry or polymers, look into the new emerging materials and what materials that have gone extinct due to new revolutionary materials and or processes.

In the first year, if you have introduction to chemical engineering course, you can start mentioning the environmental aspects. After introducing the definition and purpose of chemical process, you probably mention the desired features, such as profitability, product quality, safety etc. You can count the environmental aspect there and introduce its importance and evaluation. LCA can be good tool to mention for evaluation for instance.

Later on, after basics and some simple examples when teaching mass and energy balances, you can give some process examples where waste is recycled for energy or chemical recovery. At that point, you can explain the benefits for energy integration and also the environmental aspect of recycle, such as reducing emissions and raw material need. One example of this kind of process is pulp and paper processes as mentioned. It is very possible to find some others as well.

In chemical kinetics or reaction engineering course (whatever you name it), after the basics, you can also spend some time on combustion (which is the main energy producing phenomena) and link it to environmental aspects. For example, coal combustion or other fossil fuels and their environmental aspects. Then, it is good transition for biomass utilization. And you can teach the current approaches when the molecular formula is unknown or too complex (in case of biomass), such as balances through elemental analysis and so on.

In thermodynamics course, after teaching the fundamental theoretical part, you can insert the energy sources and count also renewable energy utilization (such as biomass, wind, solar etc.). This content can fit especially after teaching Carnot and Rankine cycles to produce energy. Then, the energy supply and environmental aspects of commercial and renewable sources can be compared.

In separation course, you can underline the purpose as product purification as well as emission reduction. You can introduce a separation process with old conventional separation and the same separation with more environmentally-friendly approach, e.g. no organic solvent used or less energy demand.

In engineering design course, when introducing the overall approach, you can introduce how environmental performance influence the mentality. Then, introduce the engineering approach of green processes, e.g. no organic solvent if possible, reaction mechanisms less intermediate chemicals, waste utilization, biomass usage etc. In the design project, you can require the students to perform LCA analysis and investigate the environmental performance of their design as well.

Have a Chapter on Sugarcane as a case study

Products from sugarcane biomass products – particularly fuels and chemicals.

Case studies on the use of lignocellulosic material as an excellent alternative to fossil fuels that is abundant, renewable resource that does not generate additional carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Improvement on

-Sugarcane/beet biomass hydrolysis, gasification and pyrolysis.

-Value-added products can be produced from bagasse. eg paper

- design of efficient boilers for generation of electricity

• No net increase in the generation of greenhouse gases.

I think it is better to include the green chemistry and engineering in the end of each course as a separate chapter, for example in reaction engineering course, chemical industries, extractive metallurgy,...corrosion.
