I am very new to electrophysiology. I have tried to the model cell and the noise does not go away. I have foiled all the wires that come out of the rig. I have tried unplugging and replugging the wires. So far nothing has helped take the noise out. I am out of ideas. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you
Let's start with the basics: The fact you have a model cell suggests you are doing patch clamp. Correct? What amplifier model do you use? What does the noise look like? Does it have a periodicity at line frequency (50 or 60 Hz), or is it irregular noise at a higher frequency?
Remove all foil from all wires. Unless the foil is grounded, it doesn't do any good. And even then, it is more likely to add noise by creating ground loops.
Start with the headstage in open-circuit and wrapped in aluminum foil. Use an alligator clip to connect the aluminum foil to the ground receptacle on the headstage. Do you see the noise in that configuration?
