How would you calculate void volume time for a GC column? I know that you can calculate void volume for HPLC columns using a formula. What is the approach for a GC column? Looking at the time of the first peak which appears?
The void volume of any kind of open tubular column is pi.r2.L, where pi is the number pi, r2 is the square of the internal radius and L is the column length. The dead time will depend on the flow that you use. You will have to divide the void volume by the flow to have the dead time.
