I suggest you consult the Project Management Body of Knowledge (or PMBOK for short). Your university library should have a copy. It is generalised for project management of all fields. :-)

My suggestions on this issue are the following:

1-Identification Phase

The main purpose of this phase is the preparation of the Client. The Identification Phase should be divided in two stages.

1.1. Investigation Stage

In this phase, all necessary studies associated to the project proposal idea that the Client has should be carried out.

1.2. Contact with Local Counterparts

After the conclusion of the Investigation Phase, the Client and project manager should be in a position to begin the initial contacts with the competent authorities of the country where the project will be implemented. The purpose of this contact is to prepare by the Client and project manager, a version of the project proposal, according to all legal requirements in force in the country.

2. Formulation Phase

During this phase, the Client and the project manager should be in a position to prepare the final version of the project proposal to be submitted for the consideration and approval of the competent authorities, based on the outcome and recommendations adopted during the implementation of the Identification Phase. During the implementation of this phase, all negotiations with the country counterparts should be carried out and all contracts negotiated abd signed.

3- Implementation Phase

During this phase, the Client and the project manager will begin with the implementation of the all project activities approved.

4- Monitoring Phase

During this phase, the Client and the project manager will carry out the monitoring of the project operation and should be ready to take all necessary measures to ensure it operation according to the activities approved and contracts signed.

In Germany a standard for project management exist (DIN 69901). There the phases are defined as:

1. Initialisation phase

2. Definition phase

3. Planning phase

4. Control phase

5. Final phase

Based on this general phase model specific models are derived.

for conducting an appropriate project management, the project management has to be adopted to the need of a project. For example in clinical studies, the project mangement is quite another one than in constructing a bridge.

Having worked as PM in a variety of companies, including pharma, my view is that the generic phases are very similar everywhere, as captured by Armin. As Tanja indicates, the way that these are developed needs to consider the specific context to ensure that the approach adopted meets the stakeholders' needs.

As well as the PMBOK you could refer to PRINCE2, link to their site is here:

Used internationally, this deliberately includes the facility for adaptation to ensure that the context is considered. There is also PRINCE2 Agile which takes the initial 'Waterfall' approach and adapts it to take into account conditions, as in software development for example, where the client's intention is less clearly defined at the outset.

The isn't a straightforward answer to your question.

PRINCE2 (Projects in Conrolled Environments) is very valuable. In PRINCE2 there is continuous high level Directing of the Project. The Project has 1. A startup. 2. Initiating. 3. Several Product Delivery Stages (depending the nature of the Project) which are controlled and where the stage boundaries are strictly managed. 4. Closing the Project (after all product Delivery stages have been completed.

PMBOK is a book of Knowledge in the Knowledge areas of Project Integration Management, Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality, Human Resource, Communications, Risk, Procurement. This knowledge is applied to Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closing). These Process Groups are utilised in Different Phases (eg Design, Manufacture etc) of a Project. Different Projects have a different number and types of phases depending the specific project type (eg Defence, Pharmaceutical etc).

Then, there is AGILE philosophy/methodology which provides a fast-paced overlay on everything.

The stages/phases of project management are: Introduction or initiation phase; Classfication phase; Design phase; Development phase; Implementation phase; Follow-up phase.

According to Lewis, James (2007), the major phases of project management can be classified or broken down into a set of phases for control purposes. Hence how the project phases are classified follow the specific sequence project work specifications of: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling and closing. Each of these phases contain detailed work structures that have activities to be accomplished including the phase review before proceeding to each next phase.

I agree with Irene Chimoga. The principles outlined are broadly similar to PRINCE2 which I have used since about 1998, and its predecessor, PRINCE in about 1994. Anyone familiar with major projects would recognise the phases and be able to apply them to earlier projects, and could adapt them to other work whether 'Waterfall' or 'Agile'.

Basically, a Project Life Cycle (PLC) comprises of 4 distinct phases (C,D,E &F) - Concept or Feasibility, Design, Execution and Finishing phases after which it is handed over to Operation for use. A fifth phase called Evaluation follows within 6 months to a year of the initial operations period, when we try to look back at the completed project, with a view to drawing lessons from it, for the planning and execution of future projects.

Every phase of a project deals with six different aspects, Technical, Markets and Competition, Finance, Environmental - Physical, Environmental - Socio-economic and Managerial.

Any project must have an Aim/Goal. Therefore the stages are as follows

1. Problem definition or Specification

2. Concepts - from where to start and where to end

3. Method - How to do or procedure for carrying out the task.

4. Planning - Analyse the requirement and draft a plan or many plan, in what sequence task can be carried out. Here plan for materials , manpower, infrastructure , money and time.

Stage as stage or stadium of realization ? Stages were well defined by the other respondents. The project's stage is the periodic analysis necessary to determine fulfilling, level of execution the project is running according to the initial plan and the criteria to be achieved: quality, performance, objectives, expenditure and more. I think all project management manuals contain such an approach. I also recommend Project Management - Rodney Turner, Chapter 9.

Many projects omit the most difficult Review stage, enabling lessons to be learned. It is a difficult exercise for many reasons, including:

• People are unavailable. They have moved on to other jobs in other companies
• People are uninterested as they cannot see the point behind the review
• People do not want to admit to any problems or...
• ....point towards possible solutions...
• ...regardless of whether they could have have done something differently, or someone else could

The review stage which might be a long time after formal completion should enable everyone to reflect on what went well, what went badly, and what could have been done differently. It enables participants - clients and all stakeholders - to reflect on the whole project from concept to completion, consider all aspects, and use the experience positively.

This is not and should never be about 'blame'. It should be about learning from experience so that all future projects are better.

So always include a review stage after the project has been completed. In some cases it would be useful to have at least two reviews, the first shortly after formal completion, the second some months later.
