There are a number of UK qualitative studies looking at organised physical activity - the attached Editorial refers to youth football such as the league organised by Colchester United in disadvantaged areas, with very positive responses from both boys and girls.
When I was in practice in Essex it was clear that to engage large numbers of school children needed a spectrum of groups on offer, ranging from dance to judo - I never wrote that up, but when Liam Donaldson was Chief Medical Officer he picked out Dance Action Zone Leeds as a good example for adolescent keep-fit.
