Basically most studies try to relate the rise and fall in sea level to the various stacking patterns/building blocks of the depositional sequence. For instance, in a typical fluvial system, or from the source of a big river to its flood plains, how can one build a laboratory to better understand the concepts of sequence stratigraphy..........?
Observations of fluvial architecture, i.e. staking pattern of channel bodies (vertically and laterally stacked vs isolated) and proportion of floodplain deposits, have been tied to base level changes and accommodation creation in fluvial systems. You can look up discussions of high- vs low-accommodation settings in Shanley and McCabe (1994) paper.
So my suggestion will be split the fluvial strata into units, using correlatable coal or shale marker beds, constrained by biostratigraphy, and then looks for these (sometimes subtle) fluvial architecture signals to explain possible base level changes

Lowering and raising of base levels affect the base level thereby producing down-cutting as in the Niger River around Onitsha as well as ponding and refilling as during retrogradation. Follow incisions versus channel, meanders and cut-offs. Streams respond to coastal changes in base levels.
