I know how to save, list, or display a scalar. But when I try to embed these commands within xtgee, I get an error. Specifically, I am following Joseph Hllbe's negative binomial text and calculating a negative binomial regression using nbreg to get the alpha parameter and then manually typing it into xtgee---family(nb 1.555). I want to do something like family (nb e(alpha)) but this returns an error.

I think the problem is that Stata is not evaluating the e(alpha) statement before it enters into xtgee.
The local macro is an option (as Amir suggests) or by "forcing" the evaluation through a directly evaluated macro.
Thus:
xtgee y x, ... family(nbinomial `=e(alpha)')
should also work and skips the necessity of making an additional macro through the `= ...' expression evaluator.
