Abaqus does not recognize it because of it, you need to define material in ABAQUS.

I had problems with an Abaqus input file that was exported from a third party software (not LS-Dyna). I found the .inp file contained set names that Abaqus did not accept. The problems I found are listed below.

• Set names should not contain a full stop.

• Set names should not be too long.

• Set names cannot start with a number.

• Spaces in set name are removed by Abaqus.

Some of these problems meant that the respective sets were not generated, so Abaqus had other problems because some sets had not been declared.

Engr. Tufail I could define the material property. However, there are about a 100 parts with different materials. It would be quite cumbersome specifying all of them. I am guessing there is some translation issue.

Simon Smith thanks for your reply. I have realised some names were too long as you mentioned. However, the error is still showing for materials. The translation document supports "mat_piecewise_linear_plasticity" though.

Did you use the following command?

abaqus fromdyna splitFile=ON

Also, did you get a "trial.log" file, and if yes, is there any useful information in it?

Thanks for looking into it. Yes, I have used this command. Attached is the material data. txt file I have extracted from the .inc file and error.txt file generated by abaqus. As you can see, the materials missing are actually generated in the .inc file, however abaqus is not recognizing them.

Does the abaqus input file that you use (the .inp file) contain the following line:

*INCLUDE, INPUT=Materialdata.txt

I assume it must.

Yes, I have used the include command and abaqus successfully recognize most of the materials except the error ones. It is quite weird as the materials recognized have similar codes as the unrecognized ones.

Do you get an odb file that you can open even though the run fails with an error? If yes, Can you open it and look to see what the material names are in the "color code dialog" button (see attached). Do you see any material names in the list that look like the "missing" materials (I wondered if they have been corrupted when they were read in)?

Yes, the odb file is generated. As you can see in the attached file some plastic materials are recognised by abaqus while the ones missing are not listed. As you stated, I also think those materials are corrupted. At this stage, I am manually assigning the materials as defined in ls-dyna. It is a tedious task, but should work. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for your suggestions.

I finally managed to solve the problem. Apparently, ls-dyna uses 80 character naming convention, while abaqus use 38. I simply changed the name from MAT_PIECEWISE_LINEAR_PLASTICITY to PLASTIC and abaqus now recognize all materials. Thanks for your assistance.
