Physical design is an important step in VLSI Design. If you search under "VLSI Physical Design," you should find a lot of references. For example, placement of logic blocks in a silicon chip such that the wiring density is minimized is a difficult optimization problem. Researchers have applied numerous techniques to solve this problem and you will find literally hundreds of papers. Good luck.
