In T1DM model, islets are transplanted into the kidney capsule.
"To confirm graft dependent euglycemia, and to eliminate residual or regenerative native pancreatic beta cell function, animals with functional grafts had their islet transplants explanted either by nephrectomy. Renal subcapsular islet transplant recipients were placed under anesthesia, and the graftbearing kidney exposed. A LT200 Ligaclip (Johnson & Johnson, Inc., Ville St-Laurent, QC, CA) was used to occlude the renal vessels and the ureter at the pedicle. The left kidney was then dissected."

Dear Collega,
Well, you have already placed an implant inder the kidney capsula. So in the same way, you remove this kidney with the implant which you want to explore. Under the same kind of anaesthesia, you expose the kidney, delicately divide it from the surrounding tissues, with a careful hemostasis (by coagulation or ligatures of the vessels), you ligature the kidney artery near the aorta and near the kidney and section it; a minute later you do the same with the vein (time to give the possibility to the blood in the kidney to flow out and so you minimalize the blood lost linked with nephrectomia). After what you ligature the ureter and section it higher, near the kidney, and the kidney is free. Be cautious: there may be several arteries and veins, as well as different types of their embranchement. You shut the abdominal cavity as usual with one or two layers suture.Be careful with the adrenal gland, which receives artery from the kidney arteria but also from the aorta. Depending on your intention to resect the gland together with the kidney or not, you have to suture this artery ot to maintain it.Have a glance more to the mouse anatomy to be sure, and do this.
