I have been trying to improve the model fit of my CFA and its been very challenging to arrive at a viable result. The best approach that gave me a fairly good result is by deleting items to improve GFI, CFI, and IFI to >.90. Having done that, some of my constructs have an RMSEA >.80 after doing item deletion which is worrisome.

My major questions are- (i) Is item deletion a good approach to achieving a better model fit? If yes, does anyone have any article I could use to support my work?

(ii) If item deletion is not a sound approach, what other techniques can I use to improve my work? I will really appreciate your contributions.
