I am working on a strain of Lactic acid bacteria which I noticed to be secreting a lot of gas in the culturing flask. I will like to study the gas in terms of identification, physiological effects on bacterial growth and host colonization. I will sincerely appreciate suggestions on how to identify the gas.

The first step will be to collect the gases evolved from the flask using a gas sampling bag. Next, the collected gas will be analysed using a gas chromatograph (GC). Alternatively, the flask can be connected directly to the GC to detect and analyse the evolved gases.
Based on the GC data, the composition, distribution, vol% and other metrics such as carbon conversion efficiency and calorific value of the gases collected can be computed. Hope this helps with your study.

Sample the headspace of the flask with a syringe and inject the gas manually into a GC-MS system. Run under full scan at low GC Temperature (e.g. 30 degrees C) and allow the GC carrier gas to chromatographically separate the gasses. ID the gasses from the mass spectra of the eluting peaks.
