I want to use few images from a published journal and conference proceedings in my manuscript. It is not a review paper. I need those images for preparing the introduction of an original research paper. How can I get the permission to use those images? Do I need to contact the editorial of the journal or the corresponding author of the article?

I agree with Theophilus as we use the same approach - look out for pictures that are protected with copyright - for those you have to pay attention. Otherwise, if you cite the publication there is no legal issue.

If the images are no longer protected by copyright and the author declare that the image is available for the public domain then you can used it provided you used correct citation standards. However, for copyright images author's permission is mandatory.
Whatever it might be; you need to follow a standard reference technique.

Generally, permission from author might not enough, also a permission from the publisher is required. Most of academic publishers have an online process for permission, mostly they don't request a fee for low-quality and educational usage. Some publishers might ask a fee for high-quality requests.
