How do I get my ONT MinIT to recognize a connected external hard drive?

Hello all! The ONT MinIT I am using does not show the external hard drive when connected to the USB SSD port. Upon connecting to the MinIT's network the hard drive is not listed anywhere. Also, how can I transfer my much needed data from the MinIT to the hard drive without relying on the MinIT's network speed? Too slow.
