We just purchased three Nikon SMZ460 stereo scopes. They have 20x eyepieces and no auxiliary objective. We are looking at small insects. There is too much magnification. We can only see one insect and we want to see the entire field. Do I need to change the eyepieces 10x and add an auxiliary objective?

To see the entire body of an insect with a Nikon SMZ 460 stereo microscope, you need an auxiliary 0.5x magnification objective. Also you can change the eyepices to 10 x.
At the lowest magnification, the actual field of view will go up to 35mm*, allowing easy observation of an entire 35mm petri dish. For additional information please consult your local Nikon dealer. In this catalog you can see the specifications:

To figure the total magnification of an image that you are viewing through the microscope is really quite simple. To get the totalmagnification take the power of the objective (4X, 10X, 40x) and multiply by the power of the eyepiece, usually 10X.
As mentioned earlier you should begin with lower magnification by using both the objective 0.5 x and the other eye piece lower than 20 x to get smaller image and there after you can focus on certain parts of the insect body such as tarsus and enlarge the image by using the zoom magnification .
