This is a good example of a mixed methods question focused on the intent of mixing, to integrate the qualitative interviews and the quantitative data, the relationship of scores and student performance.

Floren - you will have a variety of questions for a mixed methods study. Ideally, you will have an initial 'over-arching' question that contains elements of the overall topic as they relate to your two data phases. Each data phase will have it's own set of questions. The qualitative phase will just have questions. As David suggests - more detail would be needed on the quantitative methodology to determine if you would be using questions, statements and/or hypotheses.

First of all, the mixed method is a combination of Qualitative and Quantitative. If you want to combine survey questionnaires (For QUANT) and interviews (for QUAL), you will have questions for both. While the questions in the questionnaires would be close-ended, the questions for the interviews would be open-ended.

Since you are using mixed method research specifically sequential explanatory design then you will have 2 types of questions i.e. quantitative and qualitative questions in which the former (quantitative questions) is very specific that you need to operationalize from your rigorous literature review or develop new survey questionnaire as appropriate. Whereas the latter (qualitative questions) is dependent on your previous quantitative research outcome that should be open ended to encourage deepest details from interviewees etc.

I agree with Jochen Glaser as the research question should require you to choose methodology -qualitative or quantitative. Once you have formulated a research question at least on a draft level, then you will have to see what is the best methodology to find the answer for your question.

I too agree with Jochen. it makes logical sense to move from the general to the specific. given a mixed method approach there will be need to narrow Qualitative findings to quantifiable data.

it made me think to ask further questions regarding this concern... can we also formulate one question, which can be both answered by Quan and Quali? And in the presentation of the data depending on the typology of mixed-method will be presented side by side... I mean when you presented the quanti results, you will be supporting it with quali results and vice versa. Thanks!

You can have quantitative question(s) for the quantitative part or phase, qualitative question(s) for the qualitative part or phase, and you can also include a mixed methods research question that focuses on the combined (QT+QL) perspective. This means you can present qualitative, quantitative and merged perspectives.
