Normally, soot sampling valve is considered as an intrusive technique to measure soot in-cylinder. But due to some reason, is it possible to just have a permanent sampling valve on the cylinder wall surface and there is no probe will come inside the cylinder. Meaning that instead of intrusive method, sampling is done by sucking the soot sample by valve into measurement line. And anybody can advice me how to have a good sampling system by this technique? What else need to consider?
The main performance goals for the fast sampling valve are to minimize interference with the chemical processes occurring within the reacting jet and to freeze the reactions as rapidly as possible once the sample has been extracted. The degree to which these
goals are met will determine how accurately the chemical composition at given location and time within the reacting jet can be quantified. If you set up sampling valve nonintrusively in cylinder, sampling valve is too far away from diesel plume, resulting in relatively large variation the sample composition on its way from the diesel plume to the collection bag.
I think what ever sample you collect will never represent the actual mechanism of soot formation inside an engine. Soot is formed and sometimes combusted at the same time in different zones inside the combustion chamber. The prevailing conditions of the burning process such as pressure, temperature and equivalence ratio are found to affect soot formation along the fuel spray and it is very time dependant. My PhD research back in the Seventies was about the prediction of soot emmission in a DI diesel engine.
