I have been trying to grow tetraselmis suecica in heterotrophic conditions but it is not working. Does anyone know how to adapt microalgae from autotrophic growth at 12:12 Lh:Dh light conditions to total darkness with glucose heterotrophic condition. Supporting literature is appreciated.
I have only found an Azma 2010 paper that explains the adaptation so far.
You should sequentially adapt it for lower light hrs and reduce autotrophic nutrients concentration by increasing organic carbon concentration. However some microalgae are susceptible or sensitive to some organic carbon sources so choose the organic carbon source which is giving better growth than others. Try these techniques and choose the right source. The other important aspect is to adjust the pH which is optimum for inorganic/organic carbon uptake.
