Never trumpet or even whisper to any one that you are writing or have written a manuscript until it is accepted for publication.
You can lock the word document or PDF file using a password.
Do not keep your manuscript or results in common computers of your lab or department.
After checking plagiarism in a software, remove the file immediately from the database. Some software may keep a copy of the uploaded file.
If a manuscript is rejected, you may request the editor to remove the file from the online journal management software. Some journals automatically remove but after a period time.
Once a manuscript is written, immediately submit to a journal for publication. Keeping it for a long time may reduce the probability of acceptance as the competition for publication is so high in reputed journals.
Do not give soft copy of your manuscript for language correction to any one but give hard copy.
Practically speaking, it is not difficult to keep the unpublished manuscript for some time. But it is difficult to keep the results which may be scattered across different lab computers. Assume I do a materials characterization for a material. I may visit different labs say XrD, OM, SEM, TEM, EBSD and so on. If I leave the results in such lab computers, it is possible that the operator of the lab may share with unknown persons. Hence, after completing a characterization study, it is prudent to ask the operator to erase all results once copying into your drive is done.
The ultimate threat to a researcher is the integrity of the supervisor. It is possible that the supervisor may compile manuscripts based on past scholars thesis and publish without including that scholar as a co-author. There are many such allegations and incidences reported against faculties working in NITs.
Dear Isaac Dinaharan; Thank you very much for your valuable participation in this discussion. I highly appreciate the important addition you have given to this discussion.
It is a moral responsiblity that researchers should not use others ideas, papers and unpublished works without their previous consent. The research also should be aware from some who can use his/her paper through keeping parts or important information away from the eyes of people who may use them without agreement or used illegally
In my opinion, all of the above methods of preserving texts are ineffective. The path is simple, you need work fast, do and publish it, and in such a way that no one has a desire to "expand and deepen" your ideas. But somebody will do it anyway. At least, you will have an earlier publication.
Scientific work is a race with no finish. We must try to lead, while there is strength.
I am agree with Dr. Shibabrata Pattanayak, in addition to this keep password for unpublished article for safe. One thing that it is not ethically right to use others data for own research.
Nice question. But i think it does not make any sense for keeping the unpublished manuscript safe for longer time. Because today researchers mind have increases to many fold and more interest and infrastructural development are taking place globally . So the idea or motivation which you get to complete the project, quite possible that same idea other may also implement .
So i can just suggest you to submit your work and get publish as soon as possible. The sooner you publish the more safer and peaceful you will be.
Yes its Simple as Dont give Access to your Friends Rivals to your Laptop Computers USB Hard drive. So they could not Copy your stuff from your computer. Regards
I agree with a lot of people's views. Once a manuscript has been written, it needs to be submitted immediately without wasting time. And again, your PC should really be made a personal item without someone else's access and document sharing shouldn't be permitted on it whenever it is connected to a network/internet. Secondly, never share an unpublished work/paper with anyone.
2. Analyze the results and publish it at priority basis
3. If there are some reasons due to which you are not able to put it up for publication immediately....then make it a part of unpublished data at any reliable online forum like at RG....keep the details hidden only abstract will appear.......in this way it will be added to your contribution at least even if it is not published.
