I am curious about the social contruct of the early days of the Homo sapiens and how, at the time when they were cooperating as a hunter-gatherer society, did they choose a leader.
Could anyone share any articles which could help me better understand this concept.

leadership in hunter-gatherer societies was based on thier activiteis. It was the greatest hunter who was the leader of the society. Thus leadership was merit based not heriditary. The coception behind such political organisation is that a leader is an individual who can hunt and feed the society.

Not sure how relevant Graeber will be to your actual question but certainly good food for thought. Ivo's third suggestion by T. Earle is a great starting point... what I find interesting is that in this book he cites an old paper by Godelier yet doesn't mention the much more comprehensive monograph from the mid-80s, which in the case of your query is especially pertinent when thinking of gender and power issues. It's not archaeological in terms of methods, but in terms of a material culture of hierarchy and power, it's definitely worth a quick scan (as perhaps might be Dumont's 'Home Hierarchicus' 1970: CUP).
