According to uSwicht, the type of radiation emitted from mobile phones is electromagnetic radiation. It's present in mobiles because they use radio frequency (RF) waves to make and receive calls.
Mobile phone radiation doses are considered to be very small as the emissions are low power (short range).Despite extensive research on the subject, there has been no conclusive evidence that using a mobile phone causes long term harmful effects in humans.
The pace of mobile phone technology is advancing at a far quicker pace than the research required into the potential harm they can cause; much more research is needed (and is being undertaken) before we can know for certain the effects they have on human health.
Studies have shown that exposure to the RF waves emitted from mobiles can cause:
- Slightly raised blood pressure at the time of use, pressure returning to normal when use is stopped (to put this into perspective, our blood pressure changes regularly throughout the day and is even affected by tasks such as speaking)
- Direct brain warming after prolonged use, which disperses as soon as you stop using your phone and causes no harm
- Mild fatigue after prolonged use
- A recent study in Sweden suggested that acoustic neuromas (benign tumours of the acoustic nerve) are twice as common in mobile phone users than in those who do not use mobiles.

The health risk is considered to be very, very small, although some individuals may be more susceptible to radiation than others.
Whilst it's true that excessive exposure to RF waves causes heat to be generated, the spoof claims you may have heard about being able to cook an egg using a mobile phone are entirely false.
Nevertheless, mobiles do emit low doses of radiation so common sense dictates that precaution should be taken when using them.
Reduce exposure to phone radiation
Simple precautions to reduce the levels of radiation you absorb from using your phone include:
- Moving your phone 20cm away from your head reduces radiation doses by about 98%. So instead of placing it under your pillow when going to bed, leave the phone at a bedside table.
- Hands free headsets dramatically reduce radiation emissions into the brain
- Try not to chat for hours on end or, if you must, get a hands free kit
- There are a few devices on the market that you can fit to your phone that reduce the emissions of radiation or allow the body to neutralise the effects, but beware of over-hyped promotions by these manufacturers using scare tactics to market their products.
- It's always sensible to take precautions where children are concerned as their developing brains and bodies are far more susceptible to radiation effects than adults, absorbing radiation at three times an adult's rate.

Current FCC regulations permit SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) levels of up to 1.6 W/kg for partial body (head) exposure, 0.08 W/kg for whole-body exposure, and 4 W/kg for exposure to the hands, wrists, feet and ankles (FCC 1997, 1999). These are based on animal tests and IEEE standards.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted an independent analysis on mice, rats and monkeys of scaled body size and concluded that biological effects occur at SAR levels of 1 W/kg, i.e. at 4 times lower than the SAR level chosen by IEEE (U.S. EPA 1984). Also, that exposure at the SAR levels induced tissue heating that lead to behavioural alterations; and may do so in humans (IEEE 2006).
However, the SAR measurements failed to assess the radiation absorption in children brains and they are much more sensitive to radiation (Gandhi 1996; Wang 2003) than adults. As head size decreases, the percentage of energy absorbed by the brain increases, (Martinez-Burdalo 2004). Moreover, children’s tissues have higher water and ion content compared to adult tissues (Peyman 2009). The WHO (World Health Organization) stipulate the children under the age of 15 should not use cell phones !!
Cell phone radiation levels are rarely available at retail locations. Consequently, consumers cannot easily identify low-radiation phones.
FCC maintains a database of mobile phone SAR values for devices currently on the market, but it is difficult to use. With significant effort, a consumer can navigate the FCC website to find the SAR value for a specific phone.
To search the FCC database, the consumer needs the mobile phone’s FCC ID number, located on a sticker underneath the phone’s battery. The first three characters of the FCC ID is the Grantee Code; the remaining numbers and letters of the ID are a product code that can be entered into the online FCC ID Search Form
RECOMMENDATIONS
Local governments should require and ensure that cell phones being sold must be labeled with their radiation emissions so that consumers can make informed decisions.
The cell phone industry should design their phones to operate with the least possible radiation, and should make each phone’s radiation emissions available at the point of sale.

Exposure to cell phone radiation, if ionizing radiation, may induce Glioma tumour in the brain. This type of tumour can also be incurred from radiation therapy for other causes. Some studies found an association between cell phone usage and a type of cancer named Acoustic Neuroma. Other studies found no such link. The recommendation is to limit cell phone exposure by using a speaker or a hands-free device; else keep the cellphone itself away from the head. Manufacturers are relocating the cell phone antenna further from the ear.
The only "clear" effect of radio frequency emissions from mobile phones is what is known as thermal effect. However non-thermal effects are subject to several studies. Based on Interphone study conducted in ten countries on 10,000 people , IARC classified Radiofrequency as possibly carcinogenic (Group 2B). Last reported study on animals conducted in the states found evidence on carcinogenesity in male rats exposed to RF 4X more intense than emissions from the mobile phones. You can reduce your exposure from mobile phone radiation by:
1- using mobiles with low SAR (specific absorption rate)
2- Using headphones for making calls
3- not making calls when the signal is very weak
4- in any way having the hand set apart from your head when making calls

If you are using an Iphone, these phones send out pulses of microwave radiation about every 40-50 seconds. There is no safe way to carry a cell phone but if people insist on doing it, it would be best to go into your settings and turn the wifi and bluetooth OFF, as well as the data usage. You can still get calls when you do this, but will not be able to get on the internet. You can turn the settings back on if you need to get on the internet. It is best NOT to use the phone for internet. Use a hardwired, ethernet-connected computer instead. People need to wake up to the dangers of this technology. We are in a very serious situation at this time and major health crises are likely to ensue -- especially in children. We have to stop using these devices. Keep your distance. Do not keep your cell phone next to your body or in your bra. ...
Talk on speaker. Holding a cell phone to your ear also exposes your salivary glands to EMFs. ...
Turn your phone off more often. No radiation is emitted when the device is off.
Consider alternatives. Any smartphone at or below this SAR levels is “safe” to use. You can check Radiation level in terms of SAR of your smartphone by dialing a USSD code*#07#, if results shows SAR below 1.6 watts per kilogram (1.6 W/kg) then it is OK otherwise you are advised to change your smartphone immediately.
