I think you identify an excellent point and technically speaking, you are protected already. But do you need to make it more formal and register it officially? There are advantages and disadvantages of this approach.

That's a fantastic idea! I wouldn't have thought about the copyright office at all. Anyway, for journal submission purposes, isn't sending a copy of one's work to the US Copyright Office considered publication? A few journals to which I recently submitted my articles asked if I sent the same articles to other journals.

Joseph C Lee I saw your article on "genuine understanding," and I'm curious to hear how "understanding" is measured or determined in your field. When I worked in hospital pharmacy in Lesotho, and "understanding" was a tricky concept.

I agree understanding is very hard to measure.

That article was more about taking about the fact that many patients do not truly understand the procedure they have been asked by their doctor to undergo. This happens even more when the patient does not understand the language the doctors are using. Do you come across that situation much as well?

Joseph C Lee , I did years ago when I was in the pharmacy field in Lesotho. Certain medical topics were taboo and it made ambiguities in patient counselling led to misunderstandings.
