A very interesting discussion on the value of credentials, the prestige of the institute and University degrees on the whole, especially when the focus is on narrow specialisation! The question is: "how can we reform the education systems for future needs of the world?"

There are a number of "indicators" regarding University prestige. For example, in the field of Management, the Financial Times elaborates a ranking with the best Business Schools. Similarly, it has a list of the 50 most influential journal for the sector.

Whereas there is an ongoing discussion about whether the Financial Times should be empowered to do make such ranking, and their potentially hidden interest, that is the current reference for my field.
I consider that the question is too broad for a straightforward answer. It should be thought of a conversation that not only includes university authorities, but also students and representatives of the industry.
It is a bit like in the middle ages when craftsmen controlled the system for their own benefit. Eventually the regime was overthrown. It might take a few more years, but it is on its way out. A degree from Udacity vs "known names" - employers will eventually realised that the "brand" is changing.
One of the indicators of the prestige of a University are the league tables. However, the rankings adopted by different newspapers/agencies are very subjective and also use different criteria, and hence the difference between them. The problem is that there are too many parameters to consider: research, quality and standard of education, resources, entry requirements, achievement, employability, etc. etc. By no means it is an exact science. Most employers are not that influenced by the prestige of a University: all they care about is the graduate they have in front of them: can he/she deliver or not?
For a strict specialisation, a good criteria will be the research profile and whether the degrees offered are accredited by a prestigious professional body.
