A NEW BOOK ON CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR THEORY BY ZOLTÁN KÖVECSES

The phenomenon known as metaphor is an extremely complex mental event - we cannot capture its complexity if we tie ourselves to existing standard views on metaphor. This book offers fresh insight into metaphor, updating an established theory, conceptual metaphor theory (CMT), in the context of current cognitive linguistic theory, and clarifying many of the issues that researchers in the study of metaphor have raised against conceptual metaphor theory. Starting with an introduction to CMT, the subsequent chapters set out propositions for Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory, including a discussion on whether literal language exists at all, whether conceptual metaphors are both conceptual and contextual, and whether they are both offline and online. Providing a fresh take on a constantly developing field, this study will enrich the work of researchers in areas ranging from metaphorical cognition to literary studies.

You have many options if you intend on a discourse analysis of poetry. You need first to find a suitable theoretical framework according to which the poems of your choice can be analyzed. Think of the theories proposed by Robert E. Longacre, Barbara Johnstone, van Dijk, Monika Fludernick, and van Leeuwen. Many of these theories are not designed to explore poetry or literature, per se, but can be nevertheless employed to investigate poetry as discourse. I myself used Longacre’s narrative schemes to examine Tennyson’s “The Lady of Shalott”. Best Wishes

A Postgraduate student asked me a similar question who planned to study Namibian poetry from a feminist Stylistics perspective. I advised the candidate to develop a content analysis checklist targeting the analysis of addressor and addressee relationship in the poem, focalization, fragmentation, thematization and power relationship in the poems. It is an intriguing area of research.

APPLICATION OF DISCOURSE ANALYSIS IN THE CONTEXT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING POETRY

In that regard, we should deal with some aspects such those related to the activities in the classroom when combined with tasks of reception-reading, commentary, composition of texts and reflection on both processes in order to systematize progressively the learning of key and discursive strategies in the literary field.

In doing so, for example, according to Acquaroni Muñoz, teaching poetry in the Second Language Acquisition setting has various possible implications:

− It can be the purpose of recurrent attention at different levels of reading.

− It can be used for the integrated development of skills.

− It is an ideal approach to developing either oral or written expansion exercises (Duff Maley, 1990).

− It promotes intercultural communication.

− It serves to exercise the interaction and mediation in classroom setting.

− It allows establishing links and comparisons between cultures.

− It serves to develop both metaphorical competence (Danesi, 1988, Littlemore and Low, 2006) and communicative competence in need of communicating and sharing the newly experienced feelings after reading or writing and discovering what the others have experienced.

− It allows students to travel new personal and creative paths in their own learning process.

− It offers greater freedom for practice of written expression (beyond the level of mastery achieved).

− It allows exercising reading strategies for the comprehension of the text.

− It allows students focusing on the form and reflecting on stylistic, structural, and discursive organization resources.

− It serves to exercise pronunciation and intonation.

− It facilitates the retention of vocabulary and complex syntactic structures.

− It is suitable to incorporate the “ludic” component of language.

− It allows students to develop new semantic fields, work with conceptual maps, and expand their vocabulary.

I totally agree. I also used mental space theory and conceptual metaphor theory to explore poetry and have enjoyed the kind of results they yielded.

Discourse analysis includes text analysis. The discursive semantics, whether spoken or written, is the same.

You need to first decide which of the several aspects of Discourse Analysis you want to do. Is it Linguistic Discourse Analysis that seeks cohesion, coherence Implicature etc? Or is it critical Discourse Analysis that seeks: Ideology, Power Relation, Institutional manipulations, ethnocentric issues and all sociopolitical issues etc that are unsaid in the text.

Whatever be the target of discourse analysis, linguistic, ideological or other, the best mapproach is, I think, to warm up on literary text (prose and poetry), because it is richer in structure than non-literary prose.

I use Antconc software. It is useful for identifying the frequency of specific lexicons. In terms of authors, I recommend Norman Faircloug and Van Dijk.

discourse analysis is a subject as well as a qualitative research analysis method @ Wooffitt (2005), @Wodak Ruth, @fairclough

I am just curious: how do you guys define 'discourse'? How many forms of discourse do you think there is? Is there an inherent principle that organizes language into 'discourse'?

Actually, I feel curious about the intention of your question, but I am satisfied with the context. In brief, as for `discourse` I would define it as a written or spoken communication that has a cognitive background. The five types of discourse are: narrative, description, persuasive, argumentative and expository. Concerning your third question, what makes language `a discourse` is its communicative agency as well as its ability to represent social practices/reality.
