You have to cover the pond because there are many things in addition to dust as trees leaves ..etc, can harm the salt gradient pond. The problem is you cant but any thing and mix the waters then the gradient will finish. In large areas pond you can divided it to section and each one has a separate cover.

You don't need to protect the salty water surface from dust as it is covered by a less salty water and with a lye of fresh water. You mean how to protect the solar pond from dust as it suspends in water and reduce the solar radiation received by the pond and reduce the collected heat. To protect the solar pond from dust you have to make a transparency cover that can cover all the pond surface at night and dusty weathers.

The solar pond are often in full salts areas and have little dust, but in the case of making one in an area where there are dust prefers be divided into rectangular areas and placed hoods her only at night to protect them from dust either in the case of the day, the amount of dust is not so influence the the efficiency of the storage process.

You could use a a light layer of floating silicon-based surfactant that collects the dust and can be skimmed periodically via a suction pump.
