Any compound of plant or animal origin which is added to the soil to enhance plant productivity.

Organic manure is defined as the product resulting from the  biological decomposition of organic substances in which carbon represent the main element in it,s structure and characters by the slow releasing of nutritional elements in the soil.

Organic manure is well defined eg. bulky,  concentrated etc. Further classifications are there as fym compost etc + green manure sweage and sludge etc. If the standard classification is followed there is no problem.

 1.) Studying composts, in the case of applying hot-water extraction the time needed for preparing the same numbers of extracts is increasing with the number of fractions. The water permeability of composts is decreasing with the number of extractions. 

2.) By using hot-water extraction the easily soluble carbon content can be extracted effectively in a short time. Most of the hot-water extractable carbon can be found in the first fraction. The hot-water extraction is a suitable method of easily soluble organic matter extraction in the course of composting.

3.) There is a close correlation between the carbon content of extracts and the absorbance figures carried out at various wavelengths (254, 410, 465, 665 nm) in hot-water extracts. After correct calibration, the absorbance experiments at UV range are suitable for measuring the carbon content of hot water extracts.

4.) Studying the measurements done at UV light with hot-water compost extracts, the changes in organic matter can be monitored in the course of composting.

5.)  The humus stability coefficient used for describing the stability of humus content in the soil is not suitable for monitoring the changes in quality in the course of composting.  

Dear followers,If you see the first three answers, there is good contrast Mr.El-laden did not specify  the decomposition .On the contrary,Mr. Alhayany specified decomposition. Dr.Mahapatra simply listed the so called manures.Farm yard manure is at least partially decomposed where as concentrated organic manures are oil-seed cakes(after oil extraction),edible or non edible.Well decomposed compost is also included in the group.Similarly sewage and sludge(not municipal solid waste compost).Then really what is manure?Is it any organic material decomposed or not  ,waste,byproduct or raw material, contaminated or uncontaminated, fresh, moist or dried?Originally,manure term is probably applied to animal dung and straw/bedding material  and now all types of organic materials, irrespective decomposition are included under organic manures.Then how to fix and control quality of manure?Weed seeds ,pathogens and heavy metals may be present in those materials.Decomposition as in composting ensures killing of weed seeds and pathogens.Let us discuss these issues.

In an organically certified system under strict European standards organic manures would be animal manures that we grown under organically certified farm conditions and not fed any non certifiable feeds.

Organic manure is a well decomposed material used in organic agriculture it is free from chemicals,harmful organisms and weed seeds either it is from a animal or plant origin. The standards of good manure are; PH is neutral in the range of 6 to 6.5 , EC should be less than 1.0 , C: N should be less than 20:1, good microbial load with high CFUs and it should be have some moisture. The well decomposed manure should have good characteristic smell and friable in nature.        

Mr.Biradar,What I desired is a full  definition of organic manure which can accommodate all  the so called organic manures under its umbrella.The definition suggested by you  appears  to accommodate only the well decomposed compost,not any other manure .listed by me or other colleagues.

I wish to elaborate four  points.1.Green manures are grown  in the field and they are directly incorporated in the field without any processing.Normally they may not be grouped under organic manures. 2.The so called concentrated manures are deoiled cakes/ oil cakes,edible or non-edible.They contain N in the range of 4-8%.Similarly the blood meal or bone meal(powdered),fish meal etc. are also concentrated  manures .They also qualify to be called organic fertilizers as they contain relatively high amounts of plant nutrients.3.In this group we have animal dungs from different animals, big or small and also farm (straw)waste or agroindustry processing waste.Animal dung slurries are applied directly to field or after some storage.They may be dried and staked and applied or they may be composted properly and applied to field.Organic waste of plant origin is applied as mulch on the field or composted and applied to field.4.The urban solid or liquid waste.Liquid waste or sewage water is sometimes used for irrigation in periurban agriculture.The solid waste is burnt or composted after separating inert materials.

The first and second categories of materials may be treated as separate materials not included in organic manures.The concentrated manures can safely be called organic fertilizers.The third and fourth categories need processing especially composting to kill pathogens  and weed seeds and get uniform product to characterize for quality assessment.Heavy metals need to be determined in municipal wastes for their toxicity .For their safe use composting is desired especially to kill pathogens.Can there be three types of  animal manures-dried and sometimes pelletted manures ,composted manures and liquid/slurry manures.Organic  materials of plant origin may be composted or used as mulch depending on need. Biogas plants also provide slurry manure.

Do you mean "organic manure" like others commercial "organic products"? If Y, it needs an easy understandable definition and controllable, too.

Even for scientific use and discussion we can not call indiscriminately any   organic residue/waste material as organic manure.We have to see the material from human ,animal,  soil and plant health point of view.Even fresh poultry manure (with out decomposition) can damage crop seedlings similar to  N fertilizers when applied close to seed.Where ever needed composting should be insisted upon to kill pathogens and weed seeds and obtain uniform quality product.For commercial organic products they have invariably to process appropriately to provide farmers a quality product.And also help government to regulate it.

Manures

Manures are plant and animal wastes that are used as sources of plant nutrients. Manures can be grouped into bulky organic manures and concentrated organic manures based on concentration of the nutrients.

Bulky Organic Manures

Bulky organic manures contain small percentage of nutrients and they are applied in

large quantities. Farmyard manure (FYM), compost and green manure are the most important and widely used bulky organic manures. Use of bulky organic manures have severaladvantages: (1) they supply plant nutrients including micronutrients, (2) they improve soilphysical properties like structure, water holding capacity etc., (3) they increase theavailability of nutrients, (4) carbon dioxide released during decomposition acts as a CO2fertilizer, and (5) plant parasitic nematodes and fungi are controlled to some extent byaltering the balance of microorganisms in the soil.

Farmyard Manure

Farmyard manure refers to the decomposed mixture of dung and urine of the farm

animals along with litter and left over material from roughages or fodder fed to the cattle. On an average well decomposed farmyard manure contains 0.5 per cent N, 0.2 per cent P2 O5 and 0.5 percent K2 O. The present method of preparing farmyard manure by the farmers is defective. Urine, which is wasted, contains one per cent nitrogen and 1.35 per cent potassium. Nitrogen present in urine is mostly in the form of urea which is subjected to volatilization losses. Even during storage, nutrients are lost due to leaching and volatilization. However, it is practically impossible to avoid losses altogether, but can be reduced by following improved method of preparation of farmyard manure. Trenches of size 6m to 7.5m length, 1.5m to 2.0m width and 1.0m deep are dug. All available litter and refuse is mixed with soil and spread in the shed so as to absorb urine. The next morning, urine of the trench from one end should be taken up for filling with daily collection. When the section is filled up to a height of 45 cm to 60 cm above the grow level, the top of the heap is made into a

dome and plastered with cowered earth slurry. The process is continued and when the first trench is completely filled, second trench is prepared. The manure becomes ready for use in about four to five months after plastering.

Compost

A mass of rotted organic matter made from waste is called compost. The compost

made from farm waste like sugarcane trash, paddy straw, weeds and other plants and other waste is called farm compost. The average nutrient contents of farm compost is 0.5 per cent N, 0.15 per cent P2O5 and 0.5 per cent K2 O. The compost made from town refuses like night soil, street sweepings and dustbin refuse is called town compost. It contains 1.4 per cent N, 1.00 per cent P2O5 and 1.4 per cent K2 O.

Farm compost is made by placing farm wastes in trenches of suitable size, say 4.5 m

to 5.0 m long, 1.5 m to 2.0m wide and 1.0 m to 2.0m deep. Waste is placed in the trenches layer by layer. Each layer is well need by sprinkling cow-dung slurry or water. Trenches are filled up to of 0.5 m above the ground. The compost is ready for application five to six months.

Sewage and Sludge

In the modern system of sanitation adopted in cities and town, human excreta if

flushed out with water which is called sewage. The Solid portion in the sewage is called sludge and liquid portion is sewage water. Both the components of sewage are separated and are given a preliminary fermentation and oxidation treatments to reduce bacterial contamination and offensive smell.

Green Manure

Green, undecomposed plant material used as manure is called green manure. It is

obtained in to ways: growing green manure crops or by collecting green leaf (along with twigs) from plants grown in wastelands, field bunds and forest. Green manuring is frown in the field plants usually belonging to leguminous family and incorporating into the soil after sufficient growth. The most important green manure crops are sunhemp, dhaincha, pillipesara, clusterbeans and Sesbania rostrana.

Dear all, I am looking for official English term for liquid organic fertilizer composed of animal urine and water, which is called "gnojówka" in Polish, because I couldn't find it in web. Most frequently it is diluted urine, however in conditions bad storage conditions it may be also a concentrated urine.

Do you have any suggestions?

I would define manure as a mixture of livestock excrements (dung and urine) with litter with considerable water content. It may be both fresh and stored for a longer time (weeks or months).

I derive this definition from simplified classification of organic fertilizers I used, when teaching in Peruvian secondary school in 1992-1995, which was the following:

- manure (estiercól) - as above;

- guano - dry animal excrements, which I divided further in: guano de islas (famous Chilean Peruvian guano), poultry guano (guano de gallinas), cattle guano (guano de ganado or guano de corral).

- green manures (abonos verdes).

I should add slurry, however it was not produced and used in that region of Peru (Selva Alta). In this context I would define slurry as a mixture of animal excrements (dung and urine). Most frequently with water addition and it may be further divided as it is commonly practiced.

This classification was very simple, however in my opinion, dried cattle (donkey or even swine manure) is much more similar in it's properties, the mode of application and action to the famous guano, than to manure! Main difference between these guanos is the N and other nutrients content (for guano de islas 10%N, 10%P2O5 and 2%K20 as far as I remember, about 4-5%N for poultry guano and about 2-3%N for guano de corral). In other words - the rules of application of these 3 organic fertilizers - guano de islas, poultry guano and guano de corral - are the same, as they act almost almost as quickly as mineral fertilizers. I am convinced in this, because I used them 4 years. The main difference between them is their dose, which should be based on N content and the amount of the P and K fertilizers, which should be used on the same plot. I f we apply guano de islas, we should remember on K fertilization, which probably is not necessary, when using dried poultry and cattle excrements (guano de gallinas and guano de corral).

How would you call the liquid fertilizer composed of urine (sometimes with addition of water, and sometimes quite concentrated due to evaporation)? Perhaps such fertilizers are uncommon in dry and tropical (including humid) areas. However, they are still common in Poland.
